1. Why is art important?

Because it’s freedom of expression. Because it allows us to share the ways in which we perceive and experience things or how we would like to.

2. How did you begin your career? What were the defining influences and impulses?

I released my first album pretty recently so I feel that I’m just now starting my career. Still, I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to be a musician. It’s what makes the most sense to me. I’m also incredibly fortunate to have been encouraged by my family. They’ve always supported me in being an artist.

3. Can you tell us about your evolution as an artist?

When I was younger I played piano and wanted to be a classical pianist, but then started playing the guitar and realized that I just needed music in my life. I used to write a lot of poetry at that time and it just sort of turned into songwriting. It’s been a pretty straightforward path I think, but I feel like I’m still at the beginning of it.

4. What is your favorite piece of art by another artist (in any medium)? Why do you like it so much?

The album “Passion, Grace And Fire” by John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, and Paco De Lucia is a favorite of mine. It’s so dynamic, so passionate. The name of the album describes what it is exactly.

5. What is your favorite piece by yourself?

Among all of the songs on “Bodega Rose,” I think I like “Real Boy” the best. I might have another answer on another day, but right now that’s the one that stands out in my mind.

6. Describe your style.

There’s a definite folk and jazz influence that you can hear in my music. In my opinion, the songs I write are usually quite reflective and intimate.

7. How do you nurture your skill or talent?

By exposing myself to all kinds of art and music, and also simply by writing songs. The more I write the less limitations I feel.

8. How can art change the world?

Art changes the world because it inspires and moves us. It can bring people together. It can change our minds. It can make us see things in a different way.

I think a link between art and activism exists because both have to do with freedom of expression.

9. Tell us about your dream project.

My dream projects are sort of all over the map and none stand out more than any other. As long as I’m being creative, then I fulfilling my dream.
